MISSION MATTERS

Dr. Reid Trulson visits FBC Newton

On Sunday, April 24th, Dr. Reid Trulson presented a program on his recent book, Charlotte Atlee White Rowe: The Story of America’s First Appointed Woman Missionary.

The book is an excellent account of a remarkable female pioneer of missionary service.

The spiritual journey of Charlotte Atlee White Rowe, the first commissioned American Baptist single female missionary, has finally been given its due through this extraordinary historical account written by Reid Trulson, the retired Executive Director of ABCUSA’s International Ministries (also known as the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society).

I have invited Dr. Troelsen to speak and present at one of our upcoming Mission Matters meetings and will keep everyone posted about that date. I attended the presentation on Sunday at FBC Newton and was intrigued by the life and ministry of Charlotte Atlee White.

Charlotte Atlee White was the first woman officially appointed as a missionary by any denomination or mission agency. The scandal of her 1815 appointment required her to prevail over gender bias, survive attempts to revoke her appointment, and surmount the challenge of insufficient funding. After marrying Joshua Rowe, a widowed missionary in Calcutta in 1816, she remained in India to serve with the British Baptists. There she overcame local prejudice against educating girls while starting schools, teaching in Hindi, and writing a Hindi spelling and grammar book as teaching aids. She confronted new scandal arising when her confidential correspondence was repurposed in America for anti-missionary propaganda. Her developing missiology critiqued the role of money in mission and the system of language acquisition for new missionaries.

Please join us for our Monthly Mission Matters Meeting
Saturday, May 14th at 9:30 AM

We will be having a conversation with Peter Carman.

Who writes, “The American Baptist Home Mission Society recently brought me on board on a consultant basis as Mission Liaison for Afghan Refugees and Evacuees. I’m writing to offer support and ask for your assistance.

As you are aware, over the past several months, about 70,000 people from Afghanistan have been resettled in the US with temporary status, following their emergency evacuation from Afghanistan. In the immediate future, several thousand more are expected.

Many churches throughout the US, including ABC congregations, have been involved already in resettlement efforts as co-sponsors working with Church World Service and other Refugee Resettlement Agencies.

I am asking for your help in connecting with ANY churches or groups  connected with TABCOM already engaged in Afghan resettlement efforts. I would dearly love to talk with a contact in each such church. I am also happy to connect with congregations—or clusters of congregations—interested but not yet engaged in resettlement, and put them in touch with other churches who are involved, CWS, and/or local resources, if any of that is helpful.“
